    • What connects a hotel overlooking Hong Kong’s harbour, a historic villa on Lake Como and a retreat surrounded by nature in Yucatán? All three have made the top ten of The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026, announced in Paris on 15 September.

The list shows how varied luxury hospitality has become. Some hotels make architecture and dining part of the spectacle; others invite guests to slow down and step away from the city. Here are the top ten, and the experience that sets each one apart.

Rosewood Hong Kong — Hong Kong

Rosewood Hong Kong takes first place for the second consecutive year. Overlooking Victoria Harbour from the Victoria Dockside district, it brings together rooms with expansive city views, a wide choice of restaurants, wellness spaces and art. Hong Kong remains present throughout the stay: the city and its harbour are central to the experience.

Capella Bangkok — Bangkok

On the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Capella Bangkok offers a more intimate stay, with rooms, suites and villas facing the water. Seven villas sit at the river’s edge, giving guests an added sense of privacy. Its appeal lies in that close connection to the river, which softens the pace of Bangkok without removing guests from it.

Four Seasons shares Capella’s riverside setting but takes a different approach to scale and design. Its interconnected courtyards, gardens and waterside spaces make moving through the hotel part of the stay. It also houses an art space created with Bangkok’s Museum of Contemporary Art, presenting work by Thai artists.

Atlantis The Royal — Dubai

Atlantis The Royal represents the list’s most theatrical expression of luxury. On Palm Jumeirah, its experience stretches from elevated pools and sea views to restaurants and evenings that continue long after dinner. Even Skyblaze, its fountain combining fire and water, turns a public space into a performance.

Passalacqua — Lake Como

At Passalacqua, the experience begins with the villa and its gardens overlooking Lake Como. Terraces descend towards the water, creating places to sit, wander and spend time outside one’s room. The hotel draws much of its luxury from its setting and from the pleasure of a day that needs no crowded itinerary.

Rosewood São Paulo — São Paulo

Rosewood São Paulo sits within Cidade Matarazzo, a cultural development where the site’s history meets the energy of the contemporary city. The hotel features artworks commissioned for its spaces, alongside restaurants and wellness facilities. Here, São Paulo comes into view through art and design as much as through the streets outside.

Mandarin Oriental Qianmen — Beijing

A stay at Mandarin Oriental Qianmen takes a different form from the familiar hotel of corridors and repeated floors. The property comprises 42 courtyard houses in Beijing’s historic Qianmen neighbourhood, among its hutong lanes. This layout offers a sense of life within the district, while the courtyards provide privacy and calm.

Upper House Hong Kong — Hong Kong

Upper House rises above Admiralty, using its height to create a feeling of calm. The hotel focuses on quiet spaces and broad views of the city and harbour, offering an experience closer to a private home above Hong Kong. The busy city remains in sight, while guests decide when to return to it.

Chablé Yucatán — Chocholá

Chablé Yucatán takes the list into the Mexican landscape. The hotel presents a stay shaped by attention to place and time, with private spaces surrounded by greenery and a wellness experience informed by regional traditions. Here, nature and seclusion become part of what luxury means.

Mandarin Oriental Bangkok — Bangkok

Mandarin Oriental Bangkok closes the top ten with a history stretching back more than 150 years on the banks of the Chao Phraya. The Authors’ Lounge still serves afternoon tea in a historic setting, while the hotel’s restaurants bring together longstanding traditions and newer experiences. Its place on the list shows that appeal can also come from a hotel’s ability to endure and evolve.

The top ten includes three hotels in Bangkok and two in Hong Kong, alongside addresses in Dubai, Italy, Brazil, Beijing and Mexico. Yet the clearest variety lies in the stays themselves: from a hotel that makes a stage of its city, to a villa that encourages guests to linger, to a retreat that finds its value in the distance it creates from the noise of everyday life.
